Location

The Boundary Waters is a big place with plenty of recreational opportunities.  The western BWCAW and Quetico offer great seclusion away from the more commercialized parts of the wilderness.  Outfit with LaCroix Outfitters and visit a part of the wilderness that is remote and quiet.

If you're trying to avoid the crowded areas of the Boundary Waters or Quetico Park you may have previously experienced or heard about from others the western Boundary Waters and Quetico offers unmatched wilderness solitude.  Check out the entry points throughout the Boundary Waters and Quetico and take note of how many groups can access that entry point on a daily basis.  Then pull out a map and look at the area those entry points support.  The entry points that LaCroix Outfitters supports offer significantly fewer permits on a daily basis, thus significantly fewer people traveling through the area you'll be in.  In addition to fewer people due to permit restrictions the land area per entry point is larger. 

Example:  The Moose River north off the Echo Trail offers 7 permits daily while Moose Lake near Ely offers 27 permits daily in addition to day use motorboat use, seasonal cabin owner boat use, and day motorboat use.  Also, check out the maps of the areas you are considering for a canoe camping trip.  If the maps have lots of red dots (campsites) all over it you can expect to see lots of groups competing for those campsites.
